Pope Francis withdrew at the last minute from the Good Friday service, the Vatican said, "to preserve his health" ahead of the Easter weekend.

The 87-year-old pontiff's health is being closely monitored after surgery last year. In recent weeks, Francis has asked his aides to read many of his speeches as he battles bronchitis, colds, and flu, and has been hospitalized for tests.

Before the airport service began at Rome's Colosseum on Friday evening, the Vatican announced that Francis would accompany him from his home instead of going in person. Officials said that the pontiff was the president of the celebration of the holy spirit of our Lord in St. Peter's Basilica in the early morning.

The institutions mark the different stages of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ, as the pope wants to apply the story of the Bible to the concerns of today. War, online hate, and the oppression of women are among the themes Pope Francis addresses in his Good Friday reflections this year.

There, he reflected on the judgment of the crowd watching the crucifixion, linking it to online hate.
