Plot: Ten years after the rain stopped to fall, Oregon was a dry desolate tract. Survivors spend their time desperately looking to locate enough water to stay alive and heading off hostile scavengers. Kendal takes care of a fellow orphan Dean, who's close to the loss of life from kidney failure. Her friend Gabriel, who lives on a nearby farm, urges her to sign up for him, but she refuses to desert Dean. One day, after hearing a cry for help on their manners radio, Kendal leaves to assist the caller. She reveals that it's far a tempting to ensnare the circle of relatives' neighbors. Kendal hides as marauders kill off the final family participants, unable to stop them, then sneaks lower back to her house in the dark.

Grace urges Kendal to accompany her and Gabriel, as she believes Carson has medication that can assist Dean. Kendal stays skeptical and hides while Carson arrives. Carson kills Gabriel's complete family, saying that everyone but Gabriel is either too antique or infirm to shop based on the restricted amount of water to be had. Although horrified, Gabriel reluctantly has the same opinion and turns in a relative who turns into additional hiding. Kendal escapes after killing a sentry.
Kendal examines Alby, a young boy who lives on his own. She tells him of Dean's plan to break out through a Cessna that has been almost completely repaired; all they need is the proper distributor cap.
